Diesel vs Gasoline
Hi Friends,
Does diesel fuel really get better mileage than gasoline ?
How does the cost per mile compare to gasoline ?

RE: Diesel vs Gasoline
gas cars are commonly getting around 25 mpg where diesels are getting 40+
It's got a lot to do with the way the engine burns fuel.
Gas cars have lower compression ratio with about 160 psi pressure prior to spark where diesels must have much higher compression ratio with around 400 psi at ignition. Gas cars are designed to always have the same air fuel ratio of about 14.5:1 air:fuel where diesels vary their fuel ratio depending on the load needed.
IF Gas cars were equipped with fuel systems that more fully vaporized the fuel, they could be a lot better for fuel economy than what we presently have. As is, with the low air pressure at ignition and the incompletely vaporized fuel in the gas car, they're only able to make horsepower with about 1/5 of the fuel in the engine. The rest is just burned in the later parts of the combustion stroke or in the catylitic converter.
