RE: Ethanol Poll # 2
First, ethanol is not just about corn. It can be made from anything organic. Brazil has become self sufficient using sugar cane.
I would rather pay $8 bucks a gallon for ethanol than $5 bucks to OPEC if it is made within our borders.
Ethanol may not be the answer but it is a good place to start. OPEC for #$% sure is not the answer.

i would gladly pay 15 cents more a gallon for gas without alcohol. i more than make up for it on added mileage. gasahol is a sham and the taxpayers are paying for it. they are taking our choice away. they are taking the "free" out of freedon.

Mrbillr & easyrider : Here in Manitoba Canada, the grain of choice for ethanol production is mostly barley. The production of ethanol is driving up the cost of feed for the hog industry, thereby driving up the cost of meat to the table for us, and the US buyer of our products. Also a lot of natural gas is used in the refining process, so that drives up the cost of heating fuel. The other reasons that ethanol makes no sense is that you have to burn more of it to go a mile than using pure gasoline, so the products of combustion pumped into the air per mile remain about the same. This is done to "appear" to be environmentally friendly.
The other reason is an ethical one . There are millions of starving people in many third world countries, & refugee camps. How can we in the west justify using food for fuel when there is no good reason for it. There is indisputable evidence that the US & Canada are siting on large pools of oil reserves that would last us 60-100 years.
(The power brokers have told the drilling companies to stop operations & shut sites down.)
The real price driver right now is the shortage of working refineries. Many have been mothballed, & very few new ones are on the drawing boards. We recently had a major shortage of deisel fuel when two Alberta refineries were shut down for upgrade, & a third broke down at the same time.
Create a shortage /drive up the price . Supply & demand. So, Exxon Mobile & friends have again made record profits.
Governments are pushing manufacturers to build more electric cars. When all these new cars are plugged in at supper time for recharge, & your wives turn on the stove, the lights will dim or go out.
More nuclear & coal power plants here we come. ( wind power is losing its sex appeal already)
But, we hear that Pres. O Bama will figure all this out.
We better pray hard that someone does, before the Arab & Chinese world cashes in all their chips. ( US national debt loans)
Sorry for the speech !!!! Don't despare, God is still there.

The pin heads in charge won't let the electric car take hold. The lost revenue of gas taxes have hit a nerve. The cat was let out of the bag with taxing the mileage you drive. Although it is now being down played.
Natural gas might be the next push. Hydroxy has hit a slight road block with the electronics, but will still keep us busy and with only small improvements in mileage but its all good and clean, so long as we keep the snake oil scum out in the open. Cheers. ya'no,a
