New Cell = fail (pics)
So I scraped my aluminum plate cell, it made a new white goo and got rly hot. But I knew it would fail so that was fine, just a test.
So I went on a hunt to find stainless steel... Home Depot... NO... Lowes... NO... Ace hardware... NO.... True value... NO
So I went to the local scrap steel yard and they had a 6lb sheet roughly 9x24" and that was $20.00... 304 12ga.
Cut it with my plasma to 3 1/2" x 8" roughly going off of S10hybrids design. Well here is what happend... I'm producing roughly .85L's a minute.
Test one
2 teaspoons of Salt, clean florida tap water 6qts of water.
After running for 45minutes or so with my truck off, it nearly drained it *it didnt do that before w/ aluminum.*
IT DID THIS.

It looked something like a dirty stall at walmart Tongue Gasp

So I emptied it, cleaned it out and tried 4qts of water, 1 teaspoon of salt...
After 2 minutes.

And then 10 minutes.

ANY idea whats going on??? Its really weird.

Don't know what's happening, but I know you shouldn't use salt as the catalyst. S-10 Hybrid seems to like it though.

i have a similar setup and mine did the same thing. you need to keep running it, clean it out run it again, keep doing that until the sludge disappears

It looks like it's carmelizing the salt or something.

"creme brule, anyone?"

you might want to try distilled water too, i have alot of iron in my tap water. i see that you were using tap water too. that may be part of the problem

I was doing some research last night and it seems that 304 stainless isn't the purist grade and its the iron in it... The guy said to keep running it and it will break in and clear up. It's pouring buckets out today so I am collecting rain water to try it tomorrow.

Cody, Use nothing but 316 ss , 304 is not good enough grade, But thats not the problem,304 usually just corrodes very fast. It has to be the salt and water mix. I really think this steal has prob been used with some chemical or something , Do yourself a big favor and buy brand new sheets of 18g 316 ss , I highly recommend speedymetals.com I bought some there, There is no min order and they will sheer to size for you.Good luck

Although I have no personal experience using salt as a catalyst, I'm pretty sure that it will corrode even 316 SS. It also gives off chlorine gas. I highly recommend NaOH or KOH, as it is a stable catalyst.
