RE: distilled or tap water?
Everyone uses distilled water because it works better if tap water worked better people would be using it because of the price. You should run that test I wonder what the difference would be with tap vs distilled with the same amount of electrolyte

RE: distilled or tap water?
The problem with tap water is that it has impurities in it that can cause deposits on your electolytes (mainly minerals...) depending on your source. distilled water is just water, period. Nothing to interfer with your electolyte action. Use distilled water. You can use rain water if you wish. It is cheap. It is distilled. Most people use distilled water or rain water to top their wet cell batteries for the same reason (ones that aren't sealed, that is).

Don't know if you'll get a MPG gain by switching but the less cleaning aspect of it might be worth it to you!

RE: distilled or tap water?
All good points and I'll add another benefit for using distilled water. Your results will be more consistent. Due to the impurities in normal tap water you can get some current through it without your NaOH, KOH, etc. If you are measuring your ratios of water to NaOH they will always produce similar results with distilled. If you use tap water the results could vary significantly especially if you fill up the generator multiple times without cleaning it out.

In Colorado too! Snow-melt just as good as rain water. My well water has lots of minerals...and sulphur!
